Crystal Ballgown, 1865

Created for an 1865 re-enactment ball on New Year's Night 2000, this Crystal Grand Ball gown is made of periwinkle rayon swathed with yards of ivory galloon lace.  The lace overskirt is mounted on tulle for fullness and ornamented with crystal sequins and handmade silk ribbon roses. The underskirt is elongated to match the elliptical hoop, and its pleats are hand-stitched to keep their lines and display the pearled appliques on the sides.   The center panel is covered in embroidered ivory bridal organza; matching embroidered trim makes the pleated ruffle that goes all the way around the bodice.   This ruffle is underlined in lilac organza, which also makes the ruffle at the bottom of the extended bodice.  The bodice itself is strongly boned and underlined, its front panel covered in organza.  Rose-patterned lace threaded with periwinkle ribbon decorates its lower edge and a silk ribbon rose accents the center of the top ruffle.  A matching hair ornament is made from ivory floral sprays and a large silk ribbon rose.  As shown, the cost of this gown is approximately $5500 plus materials.     A matching handbag and shawl are available separately: click here for photo.
