Midsummer Night's Dream
A
recent Courts of Faerie May-Day ball was the occasion for this
gown of featherweight iridescent green silk, worn over a crinoline
and a Victorian corset. The back-laced bodice is strapless,
with sheer green leaf-shaped dags sewn into the bottom, and
is ornamented with metallic lace and antique gold trim.
The five-yard skirt is simply gathered into a waistband.
All the other features of the gown are optional: the wing-shaped
translucent sleeves in layers are worn as a "shrug"
that ties on behind the shoulders, and the overskirt is composed
of layers of three different iridescent sheers on a thin waistband
that fastens in the front, under the bodice. The matching
wire-frame wings tie on over and under the shoulders from a
small rigid frame in the center back. The cost of the
basic gown is about $2400 plus materials. The sleeves and 7-petal overskirt
are an additional $500. The wings are individually negotiated
based on size, shape, number of "veins", and materials:
the pair shown is about $400.
